As I sat reading the July 7 edition of the Northeastern News, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud over the amount of coverage concerning the Council for University Program’s budget. The articles titled “Concert comeback” and “CUP fund falls short despite rollover” were not only misinforming but reeking of spoiled brat syndrome.
One question I have for the former President of CUP Tom Kneafsey is, why are you whining? You already had the privilege of being a member of the “big three” — a term coined by the new Student Government Association President Andres Vargas to describe the upper class in the student organizational hierarchy or the “have-mores.” The $250,000 in the Major Concert Fund, which the Northeastern News conveniently failed to report, is reserved only for CUP. That means none of the other 200 plus groups can attempt to bid for a portion of that money.* The reasoning behind this is the belief that the “average” student group lacks the skill and administrative backing to bring a major concert to Northeastern.
So then why do we hear Kneafsey complaining when CUP received a 10 percent increase in its budget and a sum of $250,000 at its disposal for major concerts? Even more outrageous is how CUP will have the opportunity to take money out of the Major Event Fund (the money available to the 200 plus student groups) to replenish the Major Concert Fund if they spend a majority of the $250,000 this fall “successfully.” If the Budget Review Committee authorizes this double-dipping, it will further prove in my mind the increase of the Student Activity Fee was for the sole purpose of benefiting CUP.
In essence, the BRC will be allowing CUP to use an unlimited amount of money at the expense of other student groups. It is disgusting to see how much money CUP is allowed to monopolize due to favoritism towards the “elitist” organizations.
