As outreach coordinator for the Democratic National Convention Committee, part of Neath Cardenas’ job is to help seat the thousands of delegates backstage at the convention. The FleetCenter looks different to her now after the months of renovations it has received since her May Northeastern commencement.
“It doesn’t feel like the FleetCenter. It doesn’t feel like Boston, the streets are clean outside,” the international business and marketing graduate says.
Streaming through thousands of visitors inside the FleetCenter does not slow down Cardenas. On one of the most important nights of convention week – the night when vice presidential nominee John Edwards gave his speech and the state-by-state roll call vote for the presidential nominee was conducted – Cardenas took slow but deliberate steps toward the area on the fourth floor where she would report for a new assignment.
Wearing a striped shirt, a pair of khaki pants and multiple passes around her neck, Cardenas looked relaxed, refusing to let the pressure of the crowds or prime time get to her.
“I am really excited. For three months we’ve been waiting for this,” she says.
On level four near the escalators is a row of blue curtains where Cardenas explains she will be working later on. She says the curtains lead backstage, and she will be taking people through them and around to the stage area where she will seat delegates.
The 23-year-old says she is not tired after working from 7:30 a.m. to midnight two days in a row. Her days consist of mornings spent at the DNCC headquarters and the Sheraton Hotel, before she makes her way back to the FleetCenter where she works on a multitude of tasks, and gets to watch some of the convention activities from time to time.
Celebrity sightings and meetings are a perk of Cardenas’ job. With only two days of the convention behind her, Cardenas rambles off a list of VIPs she has either seen or met, which includes U2’s lead singer Bono. Cardenas introduced her mother to the rock star and took their picture together when he attended Tuesday night.
Cardenas said she also saw some “great” speeches, citing the one delivered by Illinois Senatorial candidate Barack Obama. Cardenas recalled Obama “blowing the house down” during his keynote address.
Cardenas, standing next to a statue of a bronze bear with a John Kerry shirt on and a table where Kerry/Edwards buttons can be purchased, says she worked hard to get herself a pass inside the FleetCenter walls.
“I never used the co-op office to help me find a job,” she says. “I found all the jobs myself. I worked part-time and in December I realized I needed money, so I had my resum
