For the past two weeks or so, I’ve been struggling to find a topic for my last column. I wanted something inspiring, something concrete and something optimistic. Clearly, I was putting way too much thought into it. There is no such thing as a “perfect” column.

Then, the other day my friend and former columnist, Anne, made a wise point. I’ve complained and whined about Northeastern probably more than the entire student body combined. I’ve called people and student groups out for their actions and did not hesitate to shine a light on all negative aspects of this university.

I don’t want those negative, critical columns to represent my time here at Northeastern. Despite the topic of most of my columns, and in many ways the tone of The News as a whole, I’ve had an amazing time here at Northeastern as Anne pointed out the other day, Northeastern, despite its many flaws, gets many things right.

Unfortunately, the positive things are rarely highlighted. So here it is, my last hurrah as editorial columnist, giving Northeastern the pat on the back it almost never gets.

First and foremost: co-op. While there are exceptions to every rule, I feel it’s safe to say that most people have a positive co-op experience. For the most part, I loved my co-ops; and now, with international co-ops soaring, I kind of wish I was a freshman again. Obviously, co-op isn’t for everyone. I know several people who did only one co-op, and even some who did none. The beauty of Northeastern is that the option is there. It’s hard for me to understand why other universities don’t offer co-op opportunities.

Next, the travel options Northeastern provides are wonderful. As students we are provided a wide variety of avenues in which we can see the world. I personally chose to spend an entire semester abroad; and that is one semester I will never forget and look back on fondly. However, with so many things going on at Northeastern and in students’ lives, some students can’t afford to spend five months away. That’s why our Dialogue of Civilization program is so great. One of my best friends spent a summer in Rome, another in China. A bunch of my friends from The News spent a summer semester traveling through the Middle East. Maybe this is just the travel bug in me talking, but I think that’s pretty cool.

Finally, the thing that really made my Northeastern experience unforgettable were the people I’ve met. It’s cheesy, I’m aware, but true nonetheless. From the great friends I’ve made to the great professors who taught me, Northeastern is a hub for interesting people. Northeastern really is what you make of it, and if you explore the different options you’re provided with, I can guarantee you’ll enjoy the ride.

So the time has come for me to retire as a commentator on all things Northeastern. It’s been a whirlwind five years, and it’s been great. If there’s one piece of advice I can give to the underclassmen it’s to stay involved and be engaged. Please, just keep the conversation going.
