With a season-high 23 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, Maralene Zwarich was the highlight of an otherwise disappointing 67-64 overtime loss to Albany, Saturday at Solomon Court.
Already Zwarich’s fourth double-double of the season, she continues to play a consistent brand of basketball for the 5-6 Huskies, and has been named The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
Her late-game jumper, along with Shaleyse Smallwood’s three-pointer, sent the game into overtime as Zwarich’s strong shooting (8-of-15 from the field) turned the game in the Huskies’ favor at many points during the game.
Zwarich again was the difference in OT, as she helped the Huskies grab a six-point lead (62-56) after a layup, but the Great Danes were able to pull back.
An inside force as well, Zwarich’s 12 rebounds aided a set of Husky drives and put Albany out of rhythm on their side of the court.
Zwarich continues to lead NU in scoring with 15.7 PPG, an impressive accomplishment as it stands at second in the America East, behind only Mykeema Ford of Stony Brook.
Her 7.2 RPG is second to just Francesca Vanin on the team, and seventh in the AE.
Zwarich appeared in all 30 games for the Huskies last year, and was named to the America East All-Conference second team. She was the team’s only double-digit scorer with 14.1 PPG.
A native of Merriam, Kan, the junior was the most impressive offensive performer for the Huskies last year with double-digit scoring in 20 of the Huskies’ contests. This is her second Player of the Week honor since coming to Northeastern.
