Meghan Loraditch is moving on to “BIG” things.
The middler international affairs major was elected chair of the Boston Intercollegiate Government (BIG) during the organization’s April 20 meeting at Suffolk University. Loraditch is BIG’s second chair to come from Northeastern in the organization’s three years of existence, and now fills the position previously held by former Student Government Association (SGA) President Michael Romano.
With the last year marked by the launch of Operation Student Shield, the passing of the University Accountability Ordinance and the death of Emerson College student Victoria Snelgrove, Loraditch has a laundry list of messages to get out to college students, and relationships to improve.
“I’d like to get BIG more involved in community service events … build good relationships with the City Council and different city offices,” she said.
“Lobbying for the rights and interests of students is going to be a huge part of BIG and already has been. One of the key parts is also building a relationship with the [Boston Police Department].”
Loraditch also said she hopes to improve some of the internal workings of BIG, and start a BIG newsletter to keep all of the area student representatives informed of city and state news that would have an effect on local college students.
BIG is comprised of Boston University, Boston College, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Suffolk University, Bentley College and Northeastern. The organization is run by a chair, a vice chair, which is currently filled by Boston University’s Student Union President Jon Marker, and a city liaison. Each institution is allowed two official representatives in the organization, but any number of students can attend the meetings, which are held twice a month at different universities, Loraditch said.
