The same day Wendy Olson decided she was leaving the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR), she received an e-mail she wasn’t expecting.
During the past weeks, she had helped interview three candidates for the director’s position, each vying to fill the spot left when former Director Bill Fischer accepted a position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in November. But, she found in the e-mail from Ed Klotzbier, vice president for student affairs, none had been chosen to fill the role. Now, she said, with her leaving her position as interim director in June, the OSCCR administration will be cut in half.
“I made the decision to accept another position,” Olson said. She said she had expected the extensive interviews to end with a final candidate chosen to fill the position.
“I was very confident we would have a new director come in. We had great candidates,” she said.
Olson said she leaves Northeastern June 15 for a position at St. John’s, an all boys’ high school in Danvers, where she will serve as dean of students.
Since Fischer left in November, Olson has been serving as interim director, with Slandah Dieujuste, who has worked in the office since 2003, and Tanner Chesney, a former Residence Director, as co-assistant directors. While extra hours often had to be put in, Olson said, the three pulled through. Olson said she hopes the slower months of July and August will make it easier for Dieujuste and Chesney to manage on their own without a director.
“Our quietest months of the year are July and August,” she said. “Residents go from 6,500 to 1,800 [students] during the summer. It’s a perfect time for there to be some vacancies, it’s a quieter time in the office.”
