Northeastern sophomore Joyce Esquerre hopes to make the whole world see double as she and her sister entered a contest to be Wrigley’s next Doublemint Twins.
The contest is run by Wrigley’s and the winners receive $10,000 and the chance to be in a Wrigley’s Spearmint and Doublemint commercials, according to the Wrigley’s Web site. However, the fine print states that the commercial is not guaranteed. Judges will select 15 semi-finalists on May 31 and one of those sets of twins will go on to be the grand prize winner, which will be announced on or around June 16.
The pair have been compared by strangers and friends to Tia and Tamara, the famous set of twins who starred in their own television series, “Sister, Sister.” This is the Esquerre twins’ first venture into possible show business, but both said it is something they would like to pursue.
“I definitely want to finish school before I go into modeling and acting but this summer we are going to go to New York City to get professional headshots taken,” said Joyce’s twin, Vivian.
Vivian studies criminal justice at the University of Maryland and aspires to be a secret service agent, as a fall-back career of course. Although interested in criminal justice, she said she would prefer to go into entertainment.
“I would definitely chose to go into show business with Joyce if I had the choice,” Vivian said. However, Vivian was reluctant at first to even send in their picture for the Doublemint contest.
“I’m really excited now and it’s a great opportunity,” she said. “I wasn’t going to do it at first but Joyce and my mom convinced me to do it.”
Unlike her sister, Joyce is studying communications and definitely wants to go into entertainment upon graduating.
“Right now it’s something for fun, but I want to go into modeling and acting after school. I think I eventually want to interview celebrities,” Joyce said.
Currently, Vivian is already doing some modeling to help a friend for his fashion Web site, www.bonnierunway.com.
The summer after their freshman year, the twin sisters received a casting director’s card and took the opportunity seriously, but had not done anything to pursue it until the twin casting call.
The twins’ mother, Barbara Davis, saw an ad for the casting call in the (N.J.) Star-Ledger and thought it was a great idea for her daughters.
“It was serendipitous because I read the paper before driving up to pick up Joyce from school,” Davis said.
Callbacks are drawing nearer and the twins look forward to finding out if they made it to the semi-finals. The News will follow-up with the pair if they are chosen to move on.
“We are really excited. I love my sister so much and I talk to her on the phone about twice a day. It’s so hard being away from her and it would be so much fun to do the Doublemint ads with her,” Joyce said.
The twins said all they had to do to enter the competition was to send in a picture and answer the question, “What simple pleasure do you enjoy most in life?” The girls answered with, “We love spending time with each other, our family, and friends.”
Although votes on the Web site are not counted by the judges, the twins still post the Web site on their AOL Instant Messenger profiles and tell friends and family to vote for them.
