In last week’s News, I noticed the photo of the large supply of confiscated liquor on the front page. I could not help but wonder what is going to happen to all this liquor. It is quite a large amount.
Is it all going to be dumped out (tear)? Is it going to be locked up somewhere? Where? Are the officers and associates going to “take care of it?” I think many of us would like to know.
If there is no plan for it, I have a suggestion. The school could sell it to legal-aged students at a discounted price (25 cents per beer, $5 per thirty, maybe $10 for a beer ball, etc.) and use the proceeds to help raise alcohol awareness among underage students. Year after year, a large percentage of underage students continue to drink – despite knowing that this is against the law, and can be detrimental to their health.
In fact, is having police crackdowns on underage students carrying alcohol even worthwhile? How many underage students were persuaded not to drink due to this crackdown? I don’t think too many were.
Out of the total number of underage students drinking two weekends ago, how many were caught? A good deal were, but a lot more got away with it.
Also, is there nothing better the NUPD could be doing?
Like trying to stop actual crimes, and not just taking alcohol from people walking around on the streets. Breaking up a loud party is one thing but taking alcohol from people walking the streets is another. If the NUPD are reduced to this kind of work then perhaps it is time to reduce the police force.
Most of us pay an extremely large amount of money to go to Northeastern and I like to think it goes to something better then cops taking alcohol from people walking the streets.
