Rapper Wiz Khalifa, known for “Black and Yellow,” will headline this year’s Springfest concert, the Council for University Programs (CUP) announced at midnight. The concert will take place Saturday, April 9 at Matthews Arena.
The Springfest lineup will also feature Third Eye Blind, Taking Back Sunday and Mac Miller. Tickets for the concert will go on sale Tuesday, March 22 at 9 p.m. More ticketing information will be made available at Cup.neu.edu in the coming days, according to CUP large concert chair Caitlyn Margulis.
Stand-up comedian Joel McHale will perform at Matthews Arena Friday, April 8, also part of CUP’s Springfest week. McHale is best known for hosting “The Soup” on the E! network as well as his role on NBC’s sitcom “Community.”
Khalifa is well known for his single “Black and Yellow,” which reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in February. Khalifa’s latest album, Rolling Papers, the rapper’s first on a major record label, is set to be released March 29.
Alternative rock band Third Eye Blind gained widespread popularity with its 1997 eponymous album, which featured hits “Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s it Going to Be” and “Jumper.” The band is currently working on a fifth album.
Long Island-based Taking Back Sunday, best known for hits like “MakeDamnSure” and “Cute Without the ‘E’,” recently announced the completion of its fifth studio album.
Mac Miller, a 19-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh, is signed to Khalifa’s Rostrum Records and will also perform at the April 9 concert.
While news of the lineup spread quickly through Facebook and Twitter, student reaction was mostly positive.
“I’d go even if it was just Wiz Khalifa and Third Eye Blind, should be a sick show,” said Twitter user @delucajared.
Tickets for the concert are NU+1 and will be available through the myNEU myTickets portal March 22 at 9 p.m. Tickets will be $12 for NU students and $22 for guests.
