Come see a very different type of entertainment at Step Fest 2011 on Saturday, April 16, brought to campus by the Iota Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Members of the Divine Nine, the historically Black Greek letter organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council, will compete in what’s been known as “the step competition of the year.” Three sororities and three fraternities will be all be competing, and in addition there will be various performances done by other community groups in the Boston area. There will also be a celebrity performer, Wale – who has recorded with Lady Gaga, Mack Miller and Rick Ross – that will join in on this year’s event. The Strong Women Strong Girls club of Northeastern will host a screening of “View from a Grain of Sand.” The film was shot in refugee camps throughout Pakistan and Kabul, and follows three Afghan women through the history of their country. The Inter-Disciplinary Entrepreneurship Accelerator (IDEA) will host its second annual Investment Forum, which includes a panel presentation of successful business members, a talk with investors in the field and a brief networking period at the end of the event. Friday, April 15
Try samples of pastries, cookies, cheese, olive oil and other traditional Italian specialties on a culinary tour of the North End – all with fellow Northeastern students. After chowing down, learn about the origins and uses of different ingredients in Italian cooking. The tour will last around two hours and will stop at several restaurants, markets and stores. Saturday, April 16
Saturdays are meant for unwinding, so why not spend a few hours tasting samples of beer? More than 50 brewers and over 200 beers will be available at the Boston Beer Summit, a craft beer tasting event that has happened in Boston since 1999. The best local, regional, national and international brewers in the world will be represented, bringing both widely-known and less commonly known beers for people to try. Planning to compete in the Boston Marathon takes a significant amount of effort, time and training, and some people may not ever have the chance. Instead of running in the marathon, why not bike it the night before? Join the 2011 Boston Midnight Marathon Bike Ride and follow the same 26-mile route of the marathon, without being deafened by Wellesley women in the famous Scream Tunnel. Karma Yoga Studio near Boston University will welcome internationally-known Anusara teacher Marc St. Pierre to teach a special class for students. He established the form of yoga, Anusara, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, where he lived for seven years. Matching polka-dotted dresses, choreography and retro styles are all a part of this performance. Fenway Recording Sessions will present The Pipettes, a modern-day singing and dancing group from England. Their latest album, Earth vs. The Pipettes, was released in September of 2010 and they have consistently been featured in the Top 40 hit charts in the UK. The John F. Kennedy Library and Museum will host the Boston premiere of “Freedom Riders,” as part of WGBH’s television series “American Experience,” which includes features on a range of people and events in American history. At the end of the screening, WGBH Radio’s Callie Crossley will moderate a discussion with the panel of original Riders Lafayette Jr. and Genevieve Hughes Houghton. The Armenian film “My Uncle Rafael” will premiere at Boston’s International Film Festival at the AMC Loews Theatre in the Boston Common.
