As the New England Patriots and New York Giants get ready to face off this Super Bowl weekend, Northeastern students are making preparations of their own for the big game.
The campus is divided in team support and in their favorite aspects of the game.
Maroun Najjar, a sophomore computer engineering major, said he plans to support the Giants at a sports bar.
“When we win, I’m planning on celebrating with lots of beer,” said Najjar, who is from Mamaroneck, N.Y. “Just watching everyone else in the bar go quiet.”
Many Boston natives are supporting the Patriots, who are the home team this year.
“I’m from New England, so I’m definitely a Patriots fan,” said Courtney Sine, a sophomore psychology and education dual major. The Super Bowl has become a family tradition for Sine, and her family holds an annual party. However, Sine will not be attending the festivities this year.
“My dad said I could come home this year, but I wasn’t going home just for the game,” Sine said. “I’ll be watching it at a party in my friend’s apartment.”
Off-campus residences are a popular destination for students planning to watch the Super Bowl, several students said. Junior marketing major and Giants fan Forrest Peralta is throwing a party in his apartment and plans on inviting his friends who also root for the Giants.
Najjar said that he sometimes feels alienated as a Giants fan, but plans to let the team’s performance in the game speak for itself.
“My friends are all Patriots fans,” he said. “It’s tough being a Giants fan in Boston, but it’s also very rewarding.”
In spite of the fierce competition between the teams, some students are not supporting either group.
“I don’t really care; both teams can lose,” joked Jacob Mulligan, a sophomore management information systems major. “I actually enjoy the commercials more than the sport itself.”
Super Bowl commercial slots are among the most expensive and anticipated by viewers. Advertisers are paying up to $4 million to air commercials this year, which is up to a 29 percent increase from last year, reports MediaPost.com’s MediaDailyNews.
“I’m a marketing major, so I love Super Bowl commercials,” Peralta said. “Last year when we watched it, everyone was talking during the game but we made them be quiet during the commercials.”
While some are excited for the highly anticipated commercials, others enjoy the other social aspects Super Bowl parties offer.
“My favorite things about the Super Bowl are the food and the socializing,” said Amanda Unterreiner, a senior finance major.
While off-campus residences are popular destinations for Super Bowl bashes, so are bars – and number of student favorites in the area are offering specials this Sunday.
Our House East has offered cheap wings in the past, but plans on a Jägermeister special this time around, though at press time, they hadn’t finalized specials. For 25 cent wings, hit up The Mission Bar & Grill or Symphony 8, which is also offering $8 pitchers of beer. Flann O’Brien’s Pub is offering a special Super Bowl brunch menu for fans to start off the day.
Some students are already planning to celebrate their team’s victory. Though the Giants defeated the Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl, both sides are confident their team will prevail.
Sine is preparing to celebrate, although in a slightly different way.
“Nothing too crazy,” Sine said. “But if people go and jump in the reflecting pool, I’d definitely be willing to do that.”
