Northeastern fashionistas, along with other local college students, glammed up for a night of fashion to kick off Her Campus’ College Fashion Week.
The event was held on Sept. 29 at The Estate nightclub on Boylston Place across from Boston Common from 6 to 9 p.m. and featured a high-end fashion show with student models. It was the first of four Her Campus fashion shows across the country sponsored by U by Kotex being presented in Boston, Ann Arbor, Mich., Raleigh, N.C. and Santa Barbara, Calif. Besides Northeastern, Boston College, Boston University and Bentley University students came to enjoy a night of fun and fashion.
The event included guest performances from the popular Boston University a cappella group The Dear Abbeys and Northeastern’s Rise Dance Company. Before the show, guests were able to enjoy an array of freebees from companies like Pinkberry and Chipotle and got to snag free gift bags from Her Campus.
“I came to the fashion show because it sounded like a College Fest for girls,” Meghan Harrigan, a middler graphic designer major, said. “I like that [Her Campus] is relevant to our school.”
Her Campus is a website that deals with all the issues a college girl deals with – from health and beauty to finding love and paving career paths. The website was first founded by company president Windsor Hanger, a Harvard University graduate who was named one of Businessweek’s ‘25 Under 25 Best Young Entrepreneurs’ in 2011 along with her colleagues Stephanie Kaplan and Annie Wang.
Her Campus is designed to have a website for every college campus that wants to register. Through this website, students can find fun articles about what is going on around campus, the latest gossip and even the top “campus cuties,” who are cute, single students chosen to be featured on the website.
The whole idea behind the event was to show students that they don’t need to empty their pockets to look good this coming fall and winter season.
“It’s fun because a lot of fashion in college is usually relaxed so [this event] brings part of Fashion Week onto our level,” Lauren Mason, a senior organizational communications major, said.
The fashion show had four different sections which included class wear, gym wear, weekend wear and formal wear. All the models that participated were Northeastern, BU and BC students, which brought lots of school pride to the event.
“There are fashion weeks in New York and Milan, so we wanted ours to be accessible to college students and bring fashion to campus,” Hanger said. “I think it’s important for students to know that the way they dress gives off a first impression and they should be aware of how they look and how they are perceived.”
The overall theme for the night was learning to better yourself – not only through the way you dress but by the way you live your life. Guests were encouraged to tweet throughout the event with the hashtag #Lifeupgrade to inspire them to upgrade their fashion sense as well as their school lives.
“It was a huge success. The house was sold out, it was fantastic,” Hanger said.
