“Go Home Mr. Ahmadinejad.”
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made his last official splash in New York this week, giving his eighth and final address as Iran’s president to the United Nations General Assembly. Why a Holocaust-denying, genocidal leader of an oppressive regime is invited to speak at the United Nations, however, is beyond me.
Mr. Ahmadinejad began his visit at the start of the week by spreading his hate on American talk shows. It is worth noting his remarks not only spoke of the destruction of one of America’s greatest allies, Israel, but also slammed “ugly” homosexuality.
After his tirade on Monday morning, Mr. Ahmadinejad went on to give a talk at the UN on “the rule of law.” This is the very same person who consistently evades international regulations, including those set forth by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and skirts sanctions put in place by the United States and European Union, among others. The very idea of a man with this history speaking about the rule of law is disgraceful.
Mr. Ahmadinejad’s much anticipated speech yesterday to the UNGA was boycotted by the United States, Israel and Canada, and for good reason. Protesting the “arms race and intimidation by nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction by the hegemonic powers,” his words, while meant to condemn western nations, precisely describe the West’s problem with Iranian development of nuclear weapons. He went on to blame the “uncivilized Zionsists” for the world’s problems, and assert the major powers of the world are allied with the “devil.”
Is this a man we want on our home turf, with the entire world watching? A person committed to the destruction of Western ideals? I certainly don’t. And the United Nations shouldn’t either.
