Northeastern University on Friday filed its Institutional Master Plan notification form with the Boston Redevelopment Authority, providing a framework for its campus planning initiatives and development strategies over a period of about ten years.
Among the projects under consideration is the development of the Columbus Lot as a complex for academic and research space.
“The site provides an opportunity to strengthen Columbus Avenue as a main campus corridor and continues to the established momentum of expanding the Northeastern campus south across the MBTA tracks,” according to the notification form. “The proposed building complex, which could ultimately consist of three to five buildings (with some underground parking) with linked connections and an open space developed in phases, would provide academic and research space for science, health sciences, engineering and crossdisciplinary research and teaching.”
The university is also considering a plan to develop the North Lot, which sits between Hemenway and St. Stephen streets, as an “academic/ multi-use facility that could include classrooms/ lecture halls, offices, laboratories, cultural space, meeting rooms and some parking,” according to the filing.
Also under consideration is an addition to Matthews Arena, specifically centered at the surface lot at the corner of Gainsborough and St. Botolph street which the document said could “provide space for future expansion for athletic training and practice facilities, athletic team offices and flexible, social space for student life improvements.”
Other possible development projects include: an addition to Ryder Hall, a consolidation of the area currently occupied by Cargill Hall, Stearns Center and the Kariotis classroom building, and the redevelopment of the Cabot Physical Education Center.
