A former Northeastern soccer player was arrested Friday night after allegedly punching a police officer attempting to break up a party at the former player’s apartment, according to Boston police.
Police arrested Mahmoud Talaat on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, threats and disturbing the peace, according to the Boston Police Department online blog. Officers also arrested Omar Talaat on the charges of disturbing the peace. A police officer could not confirm that the men are related.
University spokesperson Renata Nyul confirmed that both are Northeastern students and face disciplinary action for their arrests. In an e-mail to the news, Mahmoud declined to comment on the incident at his lawyer’s advisement.
According to the blog, police officers responded to a loud party complaint at Mahmoud’s apartment on 2 Avery St, near Chinatown. Officers reported smelling marijuana. After asking Mahmoud to turn down the music, the report states that he became aggressive and resisted arrest. He allegedly hit one of the officers in the face and was arrested. Omar was also arrested for refusing to ‘discontinue his disruptive behavior,’ the blog states.
Mahmoud played men’s soccer through the 2007 season. Head coach Brian Ainscough did not disclose Mahmoud’s reason for leaving the team but said it was not related to bad behavior and he was surprised to hear of the incident.
‘He was a good kid, and we were sorry when he stepped away from the team,’ Ainscough said.
The former player attended high school in Alexandria, Egypt, according to his gonu.com profile. He was a goalie and started in goal in 17 of Northeastern’s 19 games in 2007, with a 1.09 goals against average.
