The Valentine Invitational saw athletes gather from across the nation to compete against each other at the meet hosted by Boston University last weekend. The event, held Friday and Saturday, featured many athletes from various clubs and schools.
With exception to the distance medley relays, the women primarily competed Friday and the men Saturday. It was a voluntary competition that offered athletes the opportunities to faceoff against new competitors and to work on improving their personal skills.
‘This weekend we sent some athletes over there for some technical things,’ head coach Sherman Hart said.
Sophomore Althea Charles strongly represented the Northeastern women at the meet. Charles placed sixth in a field of 55 in the weight throw by marking a distance of 15.41 meters. In addition, She placed seventh in a field of 52 in the shot put with a throw of 12.66 meters. Junior Celeste Holder finished fifth in a field of 48 in the long jump by posting a distance of 5.41 meters.
On the men’s side, junior Nate Hunter and senior Bamidele Faboyede were two notables who were successful in their respective field events. Faboyede, who marked a distance of 18.08 meters in the weight throw, placed third in a field of 32 competitors. Hunter, who posted a 17.86-meter throw in the shot put, placed second in a field of 50. Hart said he hopes to see Hunter go to Nationals.
Despite the successes for the Huskies, Hart stressed that the meet was not about winning or losing, but rather about working on technicalities for improvement. He acknowledged that this week was somewhat of a break for his athletes with the absence of a meet but added that it was beneficial to those who participated.
The men’s and women’s teams will take part in another non-scoring meet at the Colonial Invitational Saturday. The event will take place in Newark at the University of Delaware’s Field House at 9:30 a.m.
