In light of the elections for the president of the Student Government Association (SGA), I wish to make public the actions of SGA Senator Matthew Soleyn during the Resident Student Association (RSA) General Council meeting last night.
Soleyn was asked by a member of the RSA General Council for a formal apology for misleading students during the elections when he was named RSA Vice President for Housing Services. Students also asked to clarify his plans for the upcoming year due to contradictory statements he made to The News in an article that ran the day following his election.
Soleyn admitted he is like John Kerry and has flip-flopped on the issue, but he has yet to clarify his position and what he wants to do in terms of leadership on campus next year ‘- VP in RSA or SGA president. So far I have heard him claim that he will fulfill both positions, decline SGA president and withdraw himself from the SGA presidential elections after they have already commenced.
A handful of General Council members, as well as Soleyn himself, persistently tried to avoid having to answer the question with motions to suspend indefinitely and to adjourn. Some of the members even repeatedly asked if Soleyn had to answer the question. After some members stopped stalling, Soleyn proceeded to motion to adjourn. When he finally got in front of the room, Soleyn explained that he would be happy to explain next week, after voting for the SGA election ends. When Soleyn was called to order and forced to explain his actions, he simply stated that he declined to comment.
After Soleyn’s antics, my questions are not only regarding his true intentions with the two positions, but also what are you hiding, Matthew Soleyn? Why won’t you be held accountable to the very students you claim to represent?
