The women’s club basketball team is heading to the club nationals in Detroit this weekend ‘- not bad for a team that only came into existence four years ago.
The team was started by’ senior biology major Lindsey Cullity, junior chemistry major Sam Mosley and senior international affairs major Jamie Webber, who have served as the executive board of the team since the team’s founding, with Cullity acting as the president.
Cullity, who played at Division III Hartwick before transferring to Northeastern, saw an announcement on the myNEU portal looking for anyone interested in a club basketball team. The team was for men only, but the three friends decided to put together a women’s team.
‘The first year, we sent out a bunch of e-mails, asking if people were interested,’ Mosley said. ‘We got some funding but didn’t really start anything until the second year.’
In time, the team expanded and began to make more contacts. Cullity said at the beginning there weren’t too many other schools nearby to play and they had to travel to Vermont, Cornell, SUNY-Cortland and Ithaca.
However, she said they have since began playing community colleges in the area, like Roxbury and Holyoke.
The team has been particularly strong this season, as they went undefeated in their regional tournament at Boston University, after losing in the regional last year. Much of the team has been together for several years, and that has shown on the court, Mosley said.
‘It’s easier to communicate, you know how everyone works together,’ Mosley said. ‘It’s a fun environment, it’s not stressful, we just go out and play and have fun.’
Cullity said Northeastern gives the team $2,000 a year but they also collect dues and began to raise money in anticipation of going to nationals. She said NU gave the team an extra $2,600 to help cover the cost of going to Detroit.
‘ Members of the team said they have high expectations for this weekend.
‘I fully expect us to come back winning,’ Cullity said. ‘Going undefeated in the regional tournament was very exciting. We should do well.’
