The women’s basketball team came into a Jan. 7 contest against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponent Old Dominion looking to turn things around following a five-game losing streak.
Early on it seemed as though NU’s losing streak would continue as Old Dominion opened a 12-point lead in the first half, shooting 58 percent from the field. The Huskies, however, would not go away and went on a 10-4 run in the second half, started by a jumper from junior guard Taryn Christian.
From there on, the game became a back and forth battle, with five lead changes and ties in the final minutes of regulation. Senior forward Kim Carr put the Huskies up late with two free throws, but Old Dominion was able to get a lay-up with five seconds left from senior forward Jessica Canady to send the game into overtime at 70 apiece.
The first overtime saw Northeastern jump out to an early four-point lead, but they were not able to hold on. The game was tied at 80 when Old Dominion’s junior guard Shadasia Green turned the ball over. However, the Huskies were not able to capitalize when Carr missed a jump shot to win the game. This marked the third time this season that the Huskies played a two-overtime game and the fourth with an overtime overall.
In the second overtime, the Huskies were able to get out to a quick lead again but were not able to sustain it. The game was tied 88-88 for the final 1:23 of the second overtime.
In the third overtime, the Huskies got the lead and never gave it back, outscoring Old Dominion 12-6 in the final frame, making the final score 100-94. This broke a 24-year-old record for most points scored in a game by the Huskies. NU was lead by Carr, who had 27 points and 14 rebounds.
Northeastern, however, was unable to follow up this performance with a win in its next game, dropping a Jan. 10 contest to Delaware, 61-53.
The Huskies put up their worst first-half shooting performance of the season, scoring 16 points and shooting a dismal 20 percent from the field. They were 1-16 shooting in 3-pointers in the first half.
Head coach Daynia La-Force Mann did not blame the shot selection, but more so that the shots were just not falling for her team.
‘I do think we were just missing shots,’ she said. ‘[Senior guard] Kendra [Walton] had some open looks and was just not able to knock it down.’
Even though they shot poorly, Delaware was unable to put NU away completely and went into the half with a just a 10-point lead at 26-16.
Northeastern, however, was able to fight back in the second half. Down 12 with a little over six minutes to go, the Huskies went on a 16-5 run in the next five minutes, cutting the lead to one with 1:27 remaining. Unfortunately for Northeastern, freshman forward Elena Delle Donne of Delaware took over and scored eight points in the final minute to seal the win for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.
La-Force Mann said she was unhappy with her team’s inability to play all 40 minutes in the game the way they did the five-minute span in the second half.
‘We have got to learn from this,’ she said. ‘I told my kids that same intensity, same attitude we had during that stretch is what we need for 40 minutes. Our opponents are not going to give the game to us ‘hellip; That’s what my kids do not understand:’ They have to work hard all 40 minutes to get wins in this conference.’
The Huskies are 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the CAA. Their next game is tonight at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
