Throughout a packed Stetson East, school spirit and NU’s Pep Band buzzed Thursday night to complete the atmosphere of this year’s Homecoming pep rally.
Originally planned for the Freshman Quad, the pep rally was moved to the cramped quarters of Stetson East due to the rain. The weather, however, didn’t deter students from showing up to support Northeastern’s athletic teams.
“It’s great to see NU come together and have Husky pride and spirit,” said Jari Majewski, a sophomore American Sign Language major, while dancing.
Each sports team was called on to lead the crowd in the team chant and after each team captains gave a brief word to the audience recapping their seasons so far.
Football head coach Rocky Hager commended the fans on their turnout at the games each week and invited all fans to join the team on the field after every victory to sing the victory song.
Following the team’s speeches, the candidates for Homecoming Court and the finalists for Mayor of Huntington Avenue were also introduced to the crowd.
The winner of the competition, senior political science major Heidi Buchanan, was announced during the rally and presented a top hat, cane, $500 and the year-long title of Mayor of Huntington Avenue.
To conclude the night, the crowd chanted the refrain “Ain’t nothing but a husky dog” and cheered as President Richard Freeland made a short appearance to congratulate Buchanan and “thank everyone for coming out and supporting the [sports] teams.”
