Richard Pitino, a 2005 graduate of Providence College and former administrative assistant at the College of Charleston, was announced men’s basketball assistant coach, Friday.
Pitino, the son of former Boston Celtic and current Louisville coach, spent the last two seasons as a manager of the Friars’ men’s basketball team. During his junior year with the program, the Friars earned their 15th trip to the NCAA tournament as a No. 5 seed. During the regular season, Providence was at one point ranked 12th in the Associated Press.
“His pedigree speaks for itself,” coach Ron Everhart said last week. “I was really impressed with his basketball smarts, humbleness and work ethic. Everything about him exudes success and confidence.”
Pitino also spent two years as an assistant coach at Saint Andrew’s boarding school in Barrington, R.I. During his first season with the team, the school was ranked 25th in the nation and won the New England Prep School Championship.
Everhart also announced Director of Basketball Operations Daryn Freedman will now act as an assistant coach as well.
Freedman is a 1997 graduate of UMass, where he worked under current Memphis coach John Calipari for eight years as a staff assistant and operations director.
Most recently, Freedman was the head basketball coach at the Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill.
