CollegeFest is New England’s biggest back-to-school event, featuring live music, student priced Red Sox tickets, giveaways and free swag from local and national sponsors. Thursday, Sept. 10
The third annual Somerville Toy Camera Festival (STCF) willopenwith a reception at the Nave Gallery Annex onThursday. Utilizing the space of the Nave Gallery, Nave Gallery Annex and Washington Street Art Center, the festival is one of the largest of its kind in the world, according to the Nave Gallery. STCF will showcase the work of local, national and international photographers and highlight their achievements using low-tech tools to produce works of art.The exhibition runs through Sept. 27. 53 Chester Street, Somerville; 6 – 8 p.m.; free.
Friday, Sept. 11
Prepare to “Send in the Clowns” onFriday when the Huntington Theatre Company premieres its production of “A Little Night Music.” This Stephen Sondheim musical won six Tony Awards after its premiere in 1973. It draws inspiration from the 1955 film “Smiles of a Summer Night”and gives the audience a glimpse into the lives of several couples.The production, directed by Peter DuBois, runs Sept. 11 to Oct. 11 at the Boston University Theatre. 264 Huntington Ave.; 8 p.m.; $20 – $99.
Sunday, Sept. 13
Rain or shine, the largest festival in Cambridge will revive its colorful celebration of African traditions and local diversity by returning for its 23rd year.Cambridge Carnival will commence with a parade featuring masqueraders and dance troupes at Putnam Avenue and River Street. The party will continue with international music, performances by local bands and DJs, a KidsFest Zone and food, drink and craft vendors. Main Street and Ames Street, Cambridge; 12:30 p.m.; free.
Monday, Sept. 14
As part of Berklee College of Music’s Summer in the City series, David Caalaman will perform at the Boston Common from Monday toThursday this week. Originally from San Diego, Caalaman began playing piano at age 8 and is trained in classical music. He is a current Berklee student studying piano performance and will provide lunchtime music on the solar-powered piano by the Brewer Fountain. Brewer Plaza, Boston Common; noon; free.
Tuesday, Sept. 15
Every Tuesday through November, Harvard Universitywill host a farmers’ market. Founded in 2005, it is one of six farmers markets supported by the city of Cambridge. This fall event takes place on The Plaza outside Harvard’s Science Center. Over 20 vendors featuring local produce, prepared food, community programming and cooking demonstrations will be in attendance, in addition to live music. Attendees may also drop off items to be composted. 1 Oxford Street, Cambridge; noon – 6 p.m.; free.
Wednesday, Sept. 16
Through the end of September, visitors to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum can experience Visitor Portraits with Charmaine Wheatley. Wheatley, an artist-in-residence with the museum since 2012, will have a conversation with each guest in the museum’s living room followed by a 20-minute portrait sitting. A scan of the drawing will be given as a souvenir at the end of the session. Sittings are done Wednesdays through Sundays and tickets include museum admission. 25 Evans Way; 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.; $5.
