Only five games into his sophomore year on the men’s basketball team, Shawn James broke Reggie Lewis’ career blocked shots record with 168 blocks. James’ block record comes in the midst of the team’s 4-1 start.
“I knew from the pace I was on last year that if I continued that way I would break the record early in the season,” James said.
After Friday’s game against Cal State Northridge the 6-foot, 9-inch forward tallied three blocked shots in the box score despite having more in the game. The error was corrected.
“I definitely had 10 blocks but the stats only had three down,” James said. “The coaches reviewed the tape and took it to the officials. They awarded me the additional seven blocks for the record.”
James, The Northeastern News Player of the Week, also had 14 points and eight rebounds.
“He had that kind of game.” coach Ron Everhart said. “He was really tremendous blocking all those shots. He’s been really active for us in the middle.”
In the team’s first loss of the season to California, James scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds as well as adding six blocks. He and senior guard Jose Juan Barea took home All-Tournament honors.
