Greeks have been enduring slander and bad publicity from the media for years, so when reading last weeks articles on sorority life at NU, I was not surprised by the opinions declared by the two news correspondents. I was more upset by the article’s definition of the “truth and facts” about sorority life at NU and how they attempted to be obtain through the most ineffective means possible.
Facts or truths about sorority life can neither be learned nor understood from meeting with dozens of sorority sisters for a couple of hours during a four day time span of Formal Recruitment. Formal Recruitment is a week long event that takes place during the evening which allows sisters of all chapters and potential new members to meet with one another. They do this to ultimately discover similarities of goals and values so that matches may be made between potential new members and the various chapters.
The most efficient and effective way to find out what sorority life is all about is to put aside the stereotypes and become a new member to find out if sorority life is for you, attend one of the many philanthropy events that chapters offer to the community, or befriend someone who is a member so that you can receive the real story of what Greek life really entails: scholarship, service and bonds of friendship.
In conclusion, I ask that people consider getting to know an organization for what it truly is and lives by before passing judgments based on its appearance and preconceived notions of those who haven’t taken the time nor made a great effort to seek the actual facts.
