As tuition bills come in, students are in search of financial relief. One method of relief is the “Scholarship of the Week” program offered through the Financial Aid Office.
The program is designed to help students meet their educational expenses. The scholarships offered through this program give a minimum of $1,000 and are endorsed by alumni, corporations, and other friends of Northeastern University.
Each of the scholarships have specific eligibility criteria established by the donors. The criteria is sometimes very specific and does not apply to a great number of students. However, this means that in some circumstances there is not an overwhelming amount of competition for certain scholarships.
This week’s featured scholarship is the Reginald C. Thomas Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is available to one student who is an upper-class biology student with academic achievement and a need for financial assistance. In order to be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must meet all of these qualifications.
The Assistant Director of Special Programs for Student Financial Services Richard Doyon heads the program.
“Not many students know about these scholarships. We will be posting them in the Self Service Announcements as soon as Financial Aid gets their portion up and running,” Doyon said.
Students around campus were surprised to hear about the scholarship program, but welcome the extra funds.
“I had no idea about this scholarship or this program. I am a biology major but sadly not an upperclassman. I will definitely keep it in mind for future years though,” said freshmen Elise Yacavone.
One student found out about about the program through a friend, who received a scholarship through the Scholarship of the Week program.
“My friend applied for a scholarship through this program and she was the only applicant. It’s an easy way for you to get some money. I am waiting for a scholarship in which I fit the criteria,” said Meredith Moore, a junior psychology major.
One recipient said she welcomed the scholarship.
“When you find a scholarship that fits you its great,” said Erin Burns recipient of the George L. Burns Scholarship.
