Last weekend kicked off Harvard Square Loews Theatre’s weekly midnight showing of the cult classic, “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
As the movie is equated with comedy and creepiness, showings around Halloween seem like an opportune time to head to Cambridge to see what this film is all about.
“Rocky Horror Picture Show” was originally released in 1975, and featured Susan Sarandon, Tim Curry and Meatloaf.
In the film, a recently engaged couple gets lost on country backroads during a rainstorm and stumble upon a castle. It happens to be the home of Dr. Frank “N” Furter, a transvestite who is hosting an annual convention for visitors from the planet, Transsexual. The very conservative and uptight couple knocks on Furter’s door to ask to use a phone, and from then forth, the fun ensues.
The movie is campy, confusing and more than a little weird. But it seems to have made a connection with legions of filmgoers. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” recently became a Broadway play, and midnight showings of the movie take place throughout the country.
Fans don’t just stop there, as they usually arrive dressed as their favorite characters, or just bizarre in general, and yell out lines and comebacks throughout the movie.
Last Saturday night in Cambridge was no exception, and was perhaps even more intense as the year’s freakiest holiday, Halloween
