With the arrival of a new bus company called BoltBus, students may soon be able to travel for as low as $1, according to local media reports.
BoltBus is set to begin service in Boston April, and will provide roundtrip transportation from Boston to New York City and Washington D.C. to New York. The buses will have more legroom, wireless Internet, power plug-ins and standard amenities, according to the website for BoltBus.
The price of a ticket from Boston to New York City can cost between $20 and $33 when purchased online rage from Greyhound or Peter Pan (non-refundable), $15 one-way on the Fung Wah and $15.50 on Lucky Star, each company’s website showed.
According to Bolt’s website, fares will start at $1, in addition to a transaction or booking fee. Charges will vary by day of the week, overall passenger demand and how many days until the travel takes place. For example, ticket prices will increase with demand. The cheapest tickets will be those purchased online one to two weeks in advance, and purchases must be made two hours before departure time, according to Bolt’s website. Walk-up fares are available for 30 percent higher than the highest advance purchase fare, but there must be seats available.
Odette Luszcz, city manager for Boston for Greyhound who oversees all Greyhound and Peter Pan buses in Boston, refuted claims that BoltBus is a spin-off company from Greyhound.
