BROOKLINE – In the end, it was simply too much for the defense to handle.
The Huskies faced the best offense they had dealt with all year, and between a running back that ran for 94 yards and a quarterback that threw for 269 yards and a touchdown, NU had a hard time stopping the Ram offense.
But it wasn’t Kirwin Watson, the running back, or signal caller Kevin Eakin that ultimately eliminated the Huskies. It was the Rams kicker, Matt Fordyce, who drilled five field goals, two against the wind, that ended NU’s season.
Fordyce set the NCAA Division 1-AA playoff record for the most field goals in a game.
“It’s a nice feeling,” said the first year Fordham starter who also doubles as a punter. “It’s definitely the best day I’ve had.”
Fordham coach Dave Clawson agreed.
“He’s been very reliable for us,” said Clawson. “He replaced another great kicker last year and he hasn’t missed too many field goals this year.”
Going into last Saturday’s game at Parsons Field, Fordyce was 12-19 in field goals. He went 5-5.
“He missed a few at the beginning,” said Clawson. “But he has made the most of his opportunities since then.”
Fordyce nailed a 35-yard field goal to make it 10-0 Rams. The Rams were able to move the ball down the field again until they reached a fourth and long situation at the Husky 35. After a little hesitation from Clawson, he elected to send Fordyce on the field.
Fordham fans were even arguing the call until Fordyce coolly nailed the deep kick. The ball seemed to carry just enough to creep over the crossbar for a connection on a 45-yard attempt to make it 13-7 in the second quarter. Fordyce then added a third from 23 yards out with 14 seconds to go in the half.
After NU was able to move the ball into field goal range, Miro Kesic hit one from 34 yards.
Eakin faded back on the ensuing possession and hit, in stride, a wide open Erik Conroy for a 73-yard gain–setting up Fordyce’s fourth 3-pointer from 25-yards out.
NU was able to get back into the game when Shawn Brady hit Cory Parks on the near sideline for a touchdown, but Fordham came right back and, at the end, it was too much Fordyce, who nailed a 43-yard field goal to put the game out of reach. Even a late NU touchdown didn’t put a dent in Fordyce’s accuracy.
The Huskies hadn’t faced a scrambling quarterback quite like Eakin, but they most certainly weren’t anticipating a day like the one Fordyce had.
