I just finished reading the column by Kat Noel titled “When College Parties Get Wild,” Dec. 4, and I wanted to give some feedback of what I thought. The article bothered me personally because it seemed inappropriate to be published in the school newspaper. The many times that she refers to “brothers” seems to be outright racist and rude.
It is also difficult to determine her meaning and purpose of using such stereotypical sarcasm such as “F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S” and “freak nasty female.” I am sure that many people found these remarks offensive and hurtful. Her opinions about many of the issues should have been kept to herself including the quality of the DJ and the roles of the people at the party.
Her opinion about the way people dress or prepare themselves is not the topic of concern at Northeastern University. Personally I don’t think such articles should be published in any type of newspaper and writers such as Noel should maybe look over what they write before they submit their work.
Columns such as hers can be found very offensive to a variety of different people. I do not intend to attack Noel in anyway by responding to her column, I just think it is important to point out offensive writing that may be hurtful to others.
