A portion of Huntington Avenue will be closed during the day Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 to facilitate the demolition of White Hall, Northeastern Planning, Real Estate, and Facilities said in an email to students on the Boston campus Nov. 1.
A section of Forsyth Street, Fencourt Street and Huntington Avenue will be closed to traffic and pedestrians from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days, according to the email.
During the closure, vehicle traffic will be directed around the block along Forsyth Street, Hemenway Street and Forsyth Way, leading back onto the main road. Forsyth Street will be a one-way street toward Hemenway Street. Pedestrian access will follow a similar path, though the sidewalks on the west side of Forsyth Street will remain closed.
According to the email, the closure is facilitated by the Boston Transportation Department to “support the demolition of White Hall,” a former residential building for first-year students. In August 2023, incoming White Hall residents were notified via email of their relocation to various residential halls so the university could begin renovations after inspectors discovered significant water damage in the century-old building.
“Although I believe the renovated dorm hall they are building is going to be beneficial for the entirety of Northeastern, as a resident of Stetson West, I think the relocated traffic could contribute to more issues on the road and possible public transportation delay,” said Jimmy Fanuele, a first-year environmental engineering student.
The demolition of White Hall has attracted many onlookers due to the building’s proximity to many high-traffic areas for Northeastern students. In the email, Northeastern’s Planning, Real Estate, and Facilities Division provided alternative routes for students who utilize the road.
