The space that housed Churchill’s Creations, the restaurant located on the bottom floor of Churchill Hall, is closed for renovations until fall 2025, the university confirmed in an email to The News in September.
“Churchill’s is under renovation this year. Two new retail restaurant concepts will debut in the space for the Fall of 2025,” Director of Global Media Relations Dan Sarro wrote.
Students had mixed reactions to the closure, with some saying they miss the sandwiches and bowls they could purchase at Churchill’s, while others, dissatisfied with Churchill’s menu, are hopeful for better food options in the future.
“I knew that Northeastern was profiting off of this, and I hated it, so I’m not mad that they are closing,” said Abigail Moore, a third-year criminal justice and political science combined major, referencing the food she had at Churchill’s in 2023.
Students said they’re excited by the prospect of new food options in the former Churchill’s space.
“I feel really good about that, and I have high hopes that they will be better than Churchill’s was,” Moore said.
Beyond the food served, students enjoyed Churchill’s as a quiet study spot.
“I love Churchills,” said Eliza Blue, a fourth-year political science and communication studies combined major. “I didn’t really go there for the food, I went there mainly just because it was a really nice study space. I would study a lot there.”
Student concern regarding overcrowding in campus spaces has some hoping for additional dining and studying options.
“I’m hoping that renovating it will make it better and make it a space that more students will want to use,” Blue said. “I will say one of the nice things about Churchill’s is that it is not crowded, but hopefully the new changes won’t change too much about it. Students will still be able to find a table when they need it.”
To Liron Brunner, a first-year student in the Explore Program, having plenty of dining options is especially important for students who are just starting college.
“I think for freshmen, because it is a hard adjustment and whatnot, to have food that you can look forward to eating, or try new dishes,” Brunner said, is “a fun activity to do with friends and a good way to socialize, especially while you are adjusting and meeting new people.”
Churchill’s closure accompanies the recent closure of B.GOOD, a restaurant previously located next to Marino Recreation Center. Students say they’re unsure how the closure of multiple restaurants on campus will affect crowds at other on-campus dining options.
“I don’t know if crowding will be alleviated [when Churchill’s is reopened] considering I don’t think many people know Churchill’s even exists, so it kind of depends on [Northeastern’s] marketing of it,” Brunner said. “If they do a really good job and people know that it’s a thing, then maybe, but otherwise I think it’s gonna be just like it is now, because no one knows this is even an option or was an option.”
