The Northeastern men’s soccer team finished the 2024 season 4-5-7 overall with a 2-4-2 record in the CAA. This season is the first step towards a bright future under new head coach Jeremy Bonomo. Bonomo coached nine seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, winning Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2023.
Alongside a new coach, the Huskies welcomed 11 new additions to the roster. Senior goalkeeper Tobias Jahn, junior defender Jaden Prado and junior defender Christoph Schurz transferred from Green Bay to join Bonomo. Prado quickly became an integral part of the squad, playing in all 16 games, including 15 starts, for the Huskies.
The team added seven freshmen this season, including freshman forward Tomas Sciarra and freshman midfielder Ethan Kang. Sciarra was named CAA Rookie of the Week Sept. 16 following a five point game in Northeastern’s 4-1 win against Merrimack, scoring two goals and assisting another. Kang was named to the CAA All-Rookie team after playing in all 16 games, making 14 starts.
Veteran presence marked much of Northeastern’s offensive success this season. Junior forward Fraser Brown led the team with 11 points off of five goals and one assist, including scoring in four straight games. Senior forward Ethan Franco’s impressive performances in the Huskies’ wins over Dartmouth Oct. 15 and Delaware Oct. 19 earned him CAA Offensive Player of the week with two goals and one assist.
Jahn’s injury just four games into the season called on graduate goalkeeper Colby Hegarty to step into net for the Huskies. In his sixth and final season, Hegarty started 12 games and logged six shutouts. During the week of Sept. 30, he was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week, the second of his career. His 79.3% save percentage and 1.00 Goals Against Average stat ranked second in the CAA this season. Hegarty exits Northeastern with 206 total saves, the fourth-best in the team’s history.
As the team settled into its new leadership, victories and strong performances began piling up. Prior to a 4-2 defeat against Elon, Northeastern went on a six-game unbeaten streak, with four ties and two wins. The Huskies scored 15 goals in their final four games, outscoring opponents 15-6. The team’s 6-0 win over Delaware Oct. 19 marked its largest scoring margin since its 7-0 defeat of Charleston in 2021.
Bonomo is Northeastern’s third head coach in five years. With the Huskies’ performances late this season, there is no doubt that this is just the beginning of Bonomo’s time. As he spends more time with the team, the results will start to show.
