Athletics Director Peter Roby announced another hiring Tuesday, as he added Devin Crosby as an assistant athletics director for development to his department.
The hiring comes about a month after Roby had announced seven additional hires to his department. He said the position Crosby will fill would be the last planned hiring in the Athletics Department for the immediate future.
Crosby has previously worked as the assistant athletics director for marketing ‘ promotions at the University of Virginia for the last two years and as the associate athletics director for external operations at St. Louis University in 2005, according to a release from the university. He worked in the University of Houston athletics department from August 2001 until July 2005 as well.
While at Virginia, Crosby’s work helped result in a 73.4 percent increase in attendance for men’s basketball at the school, as well as helped the men’s soccer team achieve an NCAA attendance record in 2006, according to the university’s release. He also helped generate more than $400,000 in media trade ageements for the Athletics Department at the school.
Crosby said he wanted to personally connect with donors at Northeastern, to better foster a relationship between donors and the Athletics Department.
“I think the most prominent thing I think about [in coming to Northeastern] is really spending time with our donors,” he said. “I want to build good relationships. I want to connect with as many donors as possible.”
Crosby, a former track and field athlete at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Penn., said he was attracted to the Northeastern position because of the school’s rising reputation and because he said he wants to be a part of the success he said he thinks the athletic programs at NU can achieve.
“I’m very excited [to be at Northeastern],” he said. “Not being from Massachussets, I’ve been able to look at Boston from afar and I’ve been able to track Northeastern as of late and it’s very exciting if you look at the success of our sports programs and the commitment of President [Joseph] Aoun. There’s a huge sense of continued excellence with the Athletics Department.”
Roby said Crosby would play a large role in augmenting the Athletics Department’s fundraising efforts and he expected his new hire to effectively help increase donations to athletics.
“With all of our fundraising initiatives, Devin will be the person organizing those,” Roby said. “He’ll be strategizing those, reaching out, trying to identify fundraising prospects and helping to manage those that we’ve already created over the years.”
Crosby was chosen from a candidate pool that was interviewed and sifted through during a period of several months, Roby said. He said the entire Athletics Department was impressed with how Crosby handled himself, and ultimately he became the candidate of choice because of his experience and priorities.
“He’s a terrific person,” Roby said. “He’s got great values. He has a real strong desire to help young people develop as people, and that’s something I feel strongly about with anyone we hire here. He also has extensive administrative experience. He comes with a lot of experience, a lot of talent.”
