People often tell me that they don’t attend Northeastern athletic events because the teams, mainly the football team, “always lose.” Could it be that athletic teams lose because people don’t attend the games?
A much underrated aspect of sports today is the effect the fan has on the game. By showing up, being loud, and actively supporting the athletes, you, the average college student, have the power to better the performance of our sports teams. We can create a movement that drastically changes the face of athletics at this school. The positive effects will be far-reaching. If Parsons Field becomes a place that other Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) teams don’t like to play at, rather than being a de facto home game where their fans outnumber and drown out ours, our team will be much more competitive. Home field advantage matters. Already you hear of Matthews being a hard place to play in. Why not Parsons?
Through this effort we can make our teams better and make Northeastern a more attractive place for elite, talented recruits, making our teams that much more enjoyable to watch and increasing attendance. And there is no better time to create this movement than this weekend, Homecoming Weekend, against University of New Hampshire .
Two years ago at the Homecoming Weekend game against UNH, Parsons Field was packed, and the underdog Huskies beat the nationally ranked Wildcats in overtime. This year the Huskies are much more competitive, and the two teams are tied for second in the CAA’s North Division. With a strong vocal crowd behind them, the Huskies stand a great chance of winning. So let’s make that happen, and create a revolution in the process.
