Some Northeastern students are missing out on a whole lot of zip.
Zipcar, a specialized car rental company, recently expanded its Zipcar for Universities program by offering rental cars to college students under 21, the age the company usually requires. But this program is only available at “out-of-market” schools, meaning areas that do not already have access to Zipcar, said Kristina Kennedy, a spokesperson for Zipcar.
“We have no immediate plans to expand the program to schools like Northeastern at this point,” Kennedy said.
All colleges in Boston will still require a 21-year-old age limit to obtain a Zipcar account, Kennedy said.
According to its website, Zipcar rents cars to members on an hour by hour basis, and the company pays for the gas.
Underage Northeastern students will not have the opportunity to obtain accounts largely because the university is located in a metropolitan area with plenty of Zipcar users, Kennedy said.
“Only schools outside our major areas of operations are allowing under 21-year-old students to use Zipcar,” Kennedy said.
Other members of the university still enjoy some special privileges from Zipcar. The company forged a relationship with Northeastern four years ago, and several university departments, including the Athletics Department, have their own Zipcar group accounts through the university, Kennedy said.
Many students and faculty members also use the service under the Northeastern plan for personal driving program, which offers a discount, Kennedy said.
“When you join through a university, you can join as a Northeastern affiliate, you’ll receive $25 to join and the regular rate is $75
