Northeastern track and field took on two meets in Boston Jan. 31 – Feb. 1 — The Harvard Invitational and the John Thomas Terrier Classic. Both featured large crowds of top track and field athletes.
A majority of competitors were from the New England area, but for the Terrier Classic, some came from as far as Tulane University in Louisiana and McMaster University in Canada. Despite facing up against top contenders nationwide, Northeastern took three first-place wins and went home with plenty of other impressive performances to celebrate.
At the Harvard Invitational, sophomore Ian Solberg kicked off the meet with a win in the men’s high jump, sailing over the bar at 1.97 meters. Sophomore Thomas Landry followed this performance with another win in the men’s 200-meter, with a time of 21.58 seconds. Landry also finished at 6.98 seconds to place 10th in the 60-meter preliminaries.
Graduate student Savion Thompson raced through the men’s 60-meter hurdles in his first event of the indoor season to finish second at 8.05 seconds. This was a new personal best for Thompson, as well as the seventh-fastest time in program history.
In the women’s long jump, sophomore Camryn Cole leaped 5.74 meters to take third place. Graduate student Lena Lebrun also took third in the 800-meter, running a time of 2:13.23 minutes. In her first attempt at the event, freshman Sloan Hinton crossed the line half a second after Lebrun to take fourth, and graduate student Azza Borovicka-Swanson followed in eighth at 2:14.90 minutes.
Sophomore Savannah Blair capped off the meet with another win, cruising through the 60-meter race to finish at 7.44 seconds.
At the Terrier Classic, the larger of the two meets, Borovicka-Swanson ran a 4:49.46 minute mile to snag 46th place and lead all Huskies in the event. Graduate student Stephanie Kriss finished close behind at 4:55.06 minutes, a new personal best.
In the men’s 800-meter, sophomore Andrew Kenny crossed the line in 27th place with a time of 1:53.86 minutes. Junior Conall Rogers finished under a second later to take 32nd place.
Graduate student Tyler Brogan clocked a time of 4:11.08 minutes in the men’s mile, leading all Huskies and breaking into the top 100. Freshman Jack Mattingly ran a 4:21.51 minute mile for his first event of the indoor season.
Graduate student Benjamin Godish clinched a top-50 finish and broke the Northeastern record in the men’s 5000-meter, crossing the line at 13:53.03 minutes. This performance was also the ninth-fastest in the Northeast Region, winning him CAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. Sophomore Ryan Sarney and freshman Nico Boyle also sped through the distance race, setting new personal bests at 14:35.02 and 14:46.36, respectively.
The Huskies took on the Harvard Crimson Elite Feb. 7-8, and the Scarlet and White Invitational at the BU Track and Tennis Center Feb. 8. Looking ahead, Northeastern will close out the indoor season at the Valentine Invitational Feb. 14-15, and the Giegengack Invitational Feb. 15.
