It’s been a mere 11 days since the field hockey team closed out its season, but things are already looking up for next year.
Four Huskies, including three underclassmen, were honored by the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Friday at the conference’s annual awards banquet in Virginia Beach, Va.
Freshman midfielder Kaela Barker was named CAA Rookie of the Year and a member of the conference’s All-Rookie team.
“Coming in it was a bit different than at home,” Barker said. “It was hard to adjust, but I got a lot of help from my teammates. They helped out and told me what to do.”
Barker appeared in all 20 of Northeastern’s games, starting in 19. She finished the year with three goals and three assists.
“I think it’s a great honor for her. I think she deserves it, she had to play center midfield for us,” head coach Cheryl Murtagh said.
“That’s a lot to ask a freshman to do. It wasn’t easy, but she has the skills and ability to handle that position. I’m looking forward to her getting better and better,” Murtagh said.
Joining her on the team was forward Carolyn Malloy, who concluded her freshman year third on the team with 13 points (5 goals, 3 assists).
The other two Huskies receiving accolades were sophomore midfielder Pam Aldridge and senior back and co-captain Jillian Wilkes, who were named to the All-CAA second team.
Aldridge was an explosive presence on the Huskies attack this season, using her speed to create opportunities. She led Northeastern in scoring with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists.
Wilkes continued to be a steady presence in the Husky backfield and became a threat on offense this year. After not figuring in any scoring during her first three seasons, she finished fourth on the team with 12 points on four goals and four assists and was the lead member of the Huskies’ penalty corner unit for much of the season.
“We had a young team this year,” Murtagh said. “We didn’t do as well as we wanted, we’re looking forward to working with and developing [our young talent],” she said.
The awards are determined through a vote of the league’s nine head coaches. Barker is Northeastern’s first CAA Rookie of the Year, and Aldridge and Wilkes are both first time All-CAA selections.
Northeastern has had at least one player named to the conference All-Rookie team every year since 2000, going back to the school’s time in America East.
“I think [having three underclassman honored by the CAA] bodes really well for us in the future,” Barker said.
