Boston residents and visitors alike came out Feb. 9 to enjoy more than four inches of snow from an overnight storm.
Despite the chilly temperatures, dozens congregated in Boston Common, bundled up in coats, scarves, hats and gloves. While some admired the pristine scenery and walked along the pathways, others dragged colorful sleds through the park, sliding down the hill over and over again. Dogs ran and played together in the off-leash area, shaking fresh white powder off their fur.
Visitors from warmer climates were happily surprised by the snow and expressed how it was an especially rare sight for them.
Cody Whiddon, a resident of Tallahassee, Florida, was visiting with his two friends, Benjamin Wathen and Azaria Fortner, for the weekend when they decided to go out and enjoy the weather.
“We never get to see snow in Tallahassee,” Whiddon said. “We had like one snow day or a few snow days, but it was just ice. It wasn’t powder like this, so seeing stuff like this is kind of cool.”
Whiddon said he was able to throw a snowball for the first time in his life. The three were flying home the same day, but this didn’t stop them from having fun in Boston Common first.
“We’re gonna play like kids,” Fortner said. “We have lots to do. Lots of snow angels to make, lots of snowballs to make.”
Next to the Common, people walked around on the Public Garden pond, stopping to make snowmen and take photos against the Boston skyline. While usually filled with water in warmer months, the pond was frozen over with a fresh layer of snow on top.
Through friendly snowball fights and carefully crafted snow angels, Bostonians made sure to take advantage of the snow, spreading joy and laughter throughout the day.
