Two.
That’s how many conference wins the women’s soccer team posted last season as it finished last in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). But after splitting a pair of home games this weekend, that’s the amount of wins the Huskies need in their final three games to secure a spot in the CAA playoffs.
Northeastern started the weekend strong, downing Georgia State (10-7, 3-5 CAA) 3-0 Friday. The Huskies piled on three second-half goals, including two from freshman forward Veronica Napoli and senior forward Jenna Lucchesi’s first goal of the year.
Freshman keeper Stephanie Gordon made four saves for her fourth shutout of the year.
On Sunday, the Huskies ran into a much tougher UNC Wilmington team (9-6-1, 5-3 CAA). UNCW emerged with a 2-1 win on Northeastern’s senior day.
“UNC Wilmington is a good team. We made two costly errors, which where non-focus mental errors in the first half, and then we came out and played a very good second half,” Matz said.
Forwards Sarah Matthews and Tandy Banks scored to give UNCW a 2-0 lead at half.
The Huskies had several good scoring chances early in the second half.
After pressuring UNCW, Northeastern got on the board in the 80th minute when Napoli broke loose down the sideline and found Lucchesi inside the box. Lucchesi was able to beat UNCW goalkeeper Chandler Follett for her second goal of the weekend and second of the year.
The loss marked the final home game for five Husky seniors: Matthews, Lucchesi, forward Lauren Meehan, co-captain and defender Emilee Ellison and midfielder Kelsey O’Rourke.
“It’s a shame that senior day comes this early because we still have three games left to play,” Matz said. “It’s certainly an emotional game. They’ve done a good job of getting the program where it is and hopefully they can help us take one more step.”
Despite the loss, Lucchesi maintained a positive outlook.
“All year long we’ve only gone up. We’ve been proud of the work we’ve done so far. Coming into the game, it was a must-win, but that doesn’t mean its over, we just have to keep working really hard.”
The Huskies start their final road trip of the regular season with a 7 p.m. game Friday at James Madison (11-4-2, 7-2 CAA).
