After many student complaints, the myNEU portal is set to undergo a complete makeover, said Ryan Fox, Student Government Association (SGA) vice president for student affairs. Information Services (IS) is working with SGA on a new, upgraded version of the myNEU system, he said.
During the next few months, myNEU will undergo a system upgrade, Fox said. The mainframe will be replaced and updated to allow more space while supporting more people, he said.
“The idea of the upgrade is to allow the system to support more users,” Weir said.
By this time next year, IS hopes to maintain a system that is more user-friendly and customizable, IS officials said.
“It will be a personalized system, where you can delete tabs, add links, make it your own myNEU, instead of a generalized system,” said Bob Weir, vice president of IS.
The new myNEU system will be able to handle each student’s specific desires, like whether or not they are going on co-op, and their major, Weir said. The goal of the renovations is to make the website feel more like their own site, he said.
There will be a master list of links a student can add to their page, as well as the removable tabs, and the added functions of weather and other features that can be accessed without even logging in, Fox said.
Co-op students might want the co-op tab to make appointments with their adviser, for example, and to see what’s going on around the co-op world, Weir said. But a student who is not on co-op will be able to erase that tab (like any other) altogether and make room for other things they need, he said.
Sara Elligson, a middler criminal justice major, said she is looking forward to the system updates.
“Northeastern needs to figure out a way to support more users at one time because I’m sick and tired of having to wait three hours to do a simple five-minute task like buy a ticket or register for classes,” she said.
Carah Schoening, a middler business major, also said she was glad the system was getting an update.
“I’m so not a fan of myNEU,” she said. “It needs to be updated to a better, more efficient system. I use [Microsoft Outlook] at work and I love it, because it’s quick, easy to navigate and never takes too long to load or download files.”
