Northeastern University’s Caribbean Student Organization, or CSO, hosted its annual fashion and culture show, “One Love,” Feb. 23. The event took place in Blackman Auditorium, where a variety of designers and performers showcased their talent through fashion, music, dance and cultural pride.
The event was hosted by professional emcee Charldyn Valcin, who led a night of joy and excitement with his combination of humor and eccentric stage presence. Accompanying him was DJ Cheem, who maintained high energy throughout the night with his blend of kompa, dancehall, reggae and dembow music.
CSO’s e-board opened the show wearing striking red gowns in honor of the night’s theme: “One Love.” It emphasized unity, peace and love, like Bob Marley’s iconic song “One Love.”
The performances kicked off with the Caribbean Vibe Steel Drum Band; the calming authentic beats from traditional steel drums transformed the audience to a beach in Trinidad. Dance performances by CSO’s Riddim Dance Troupe, Jean Appolon Expressions and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s Rhythms of Africa and Kompassion followed. Berklee College of Music student Vanessa DeJean showcased her angelic vocals in a solo performance as well.
The fashion show was woven in between performances throughout the night. Student Models were coached and directed by professional model Darah Naomi to showcase designs by OhEmG Designs, Backend 2 Riches, Forensic Wrld, Warxpeace Clothing, Jess For The Culture and Boston Socaholics.
