Northeastern baseball (34-9, 16-2 CAA) narrowly edged the Harvard Crimson (11-23, 8-9 Ivy) 5-4 in the Baseball Beanpot April 29 at Fenway Park.
This was the second consecutive year and eighth time in history that the team lifted the Beanpot trophy, and the first time the Huskies won back-to-back titles since the 1994 and 1995 seasons. This was the third time in tournament history that Northeastern met Harvard and the Huskies’ first time winning over the Crimson.
“We weren’t quite ourselves, but we found a way to get it done,” said head coach Mike Glavine. “It’s really hard to play at the level we were playing for so long, you’re bound to take a little bit of [a] step back … So I think that speaks to the leadership and the toughness of this team.”

In the second inning, the Crimson struck first with sophomore third baseman Tyler Shulman hitting a home run down the right field line.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Huskies tied it up. Senior third baseman Jack Doyle walked to first on a hit-by-pitch. While junior second baseman Carmelo Musacchia was at bat, Doyle stole second base. Musacchia failed to earn a hit. Graduate student first baseman Alex Lane hit a double down left center with the ball bouncing back from the Green Monster. Off this run, Doyle scored to tie the game at one.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Musacchia hit a triple off the Green Monster on his first attempt. Lane took a double to send Musacchia home, making the score 2-1 with no outs. Junior designated hitter Matt Brinker singled to center field to bring Lane to third. Off of a hit by graduate student catcher Gregory Bozzo that was caught, Lane found home and Brinker stayed at first. Brinker moved to second off a walk by sophomore right fielder Ryan Gerety.
After this play, the Crimson replaced their junior left-handed pitcher Brian Dowling for freshman left-handed pitcher Charley Bergsma.
Bergsma walked junior center fielder Cam Maldonado to bring Gerety to second and Brinker to third. Bergsma sent another walk to first, this time redshirt junior left fielder Harrison Feinberg. Feinberg’s walk brought Maldonado to second, Gerety to third and Brinker home, making the score 4-1. Off of junior shortstop Jack Goodman’s failed attempt to reach first, Gerety added another run for the Huskies. The inning ended with Doyle caught at first base.
In the top of the sixth, graduate student left-handed pitcher Max Gitlin walked sophomore right fielder Ryan Mooney, but he was later picked off in between first and second base. Northeastern swapped out Gitlin for senior right-handed pitcher Jack Beauchesne.
“[Gitlin is] just tough as nails and he competes, and he’s got great stuff and he gives us a chance to win every time,” Glavine said.
At the top of the eighth inning, graduate student right-handed pitcher Cooper McGrath replaced Beauchesne for the Huskies.
In the final inning, after walking three consecutive Crimson batters, McGrath was replaced by senior right-handed pitcher Brett Dunham.
Dunham was unable to break the loaded bases, which brought in three more runs for Harvard, making the score 5-4. Finally, Dunham struck out back-to-back hitters to lift the Huskies over the Crimson.
Northeastern is back in action in its home series against the University of Delaware Blue Hens (25-18, 10-8 CAA) May 2 to 4.
