The Northeastern baseball team (42-9, 22-2 CAA) defeated the University of Connecticut Huskies (33-19, 17-4 Big East) 7-1 on the road May 13, earning a program record of 21 consecutive wins. The team’s success this season has propelled it to No. 25 in the NCAA rankings.
In the top of the second inning, the Northeastern Huskies claimed their first two runs. Junior designated hitter Matt Brinker singled to the right side then stole second base before advancing to third during a passed ball. Graduate student catcher Gregory Bozzo walked to first and then collected second base on a wild pitch. On sophomore third baseman Chris Walsh’s double, Brinker and Bozzo found home.
In the third inning, Northeastern continued its momentum. Redshirt junior left fielder Harrison Feinberg doubled to right center, then stole third base off junior second baseman Carmelo Musacchia’s strikeout. Feinberg was sent home when Brinker singled.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, UConn scored its only run of the game. Sophomore first baseman Tyler Minick tripled to right field. He scored on a wild pitch to make the scoreboard read 3-1.
In the sixth, Brinker added another run to his collection. He reached first base on a fielder’s choice and stole second during graduate student first baseman Alex Lane’s time at bat. A single by Bozzo, followed by his advance to second base, gave Brinker time to return home.
In the ninth and final inning, the Huskies widened the gap, adding another three runs to make the score 7-1.
Bozzo singled to center field and advanced to second on Walsh’s bunt. Sophomore right fielder Ryan Gerety walked, and junior center fielder Cam Maldonado doubled down, sending the ball down right field to bring in both Gerety and Bozzo. Maldonado collected third, then was sent home on an error by UConn’s junior second baseman Ryan Daniels as junior shortstop Jack Goodman grabbed second base. The final score was 7-1.
Northeastern will take on the North Carolina A&T Aggies (15-34, 9-15 CAA) May 15 to 17 in a home series.
