The Northeastern men’s soccer team (2-4-1, 1-2 CAA) was defeated 3-2 by the Dartmouth University Big Green (1-1-3, 0-0 Ivy) in a close contest.
The Big Green got on the board first in the 21st minute. Freshman midfielder Olly Spicer slotted a right kick into the top right corner of the net to put his team up 1-0.
Nine minutes later, the Huskies got one back. Sophomore forward Bryce Flowers drew a foul inside the box before converting the penalty to even the score at 1-1.
In the dying minutes of the first half, a foul by junior midfielder Neil Devnani gave Dartmouth another free kick. Spicer fired the kick that was deflected off of Northeastern’s defense and fell to junior forward Will Lulka for an easy tap-in in the 42nd minute.
Down 2-1 at the half, the Huskies needed to find an answer.
Northeastern managed five shots in the opening 30 minutes of the second half, forcing two saves from freshman goalkeeper TJ Jeffreys. On the other end of the field, graduate goalkeeper Tobias Jahn recorded his first and only save of the game in the 52nd minute.
Sophomore forward Eidur Baldvinsson scored an insurance goal for the Big Green, putting his team up 3-1 in the 78th minute.
Three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Ethan Kang sent a corner into the box that landed on the head of sophomore defender Ethan Leary. The ball hit multiple Dartmouth defenders before senior defender and midfielder Matty Gardner slotted it into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal, cutting Dartmouth’s lead to 3-2.
A red card dealt to senior midfielder Morris Matthews following the goal eliminated any momentum the Huskies had generated as the team would not get another shot for the remainder of the game.
Northeastern will look to bounce back on the road against the Harvard University Crimson (3-1-1, 0-0 Ivy) Sept. 23.
