CAMBRIDGE – As the local “Clash of Titans” closed last night, under the steel roof of the Bright Hockey Center, the big dogs faced off, being the two left behind for scraps in the obvious dog-eat-dog world.
The Boston University Terriers (5-13-1) were annihilated by the Northeastern Huskies, whose effort and dedication finally paid off. This time they took 38 shots on goal and came off with eight goals, as opposed to the last game, when they took 32 shots on goal and only received two goals as a reward. NU coach Joy Woog also changed up the defense a bit, switching goalies from Chanda Gunn to Katy Augustyn, and having the defense a little more involved than last game.
Assisted by teammates Danielle Keefe and Cyndy Kenyon, Jess Judge scored the first goal of the game 10 seconds of play, which set the pace for the rest of the match.
When talking to coach Woog about the differences she saw in the team between the two tournament games,”nothing was different,” Woog said. “Once again the kids worked hard, and that’s what happened last time and there’s really no difference in the way we played.”
The next two goals took place a little over seven minutes later, but happened within less than twenty seconds of each other, one at 7:36 and one at 7:53. The first, unassisted, was placed in the net by Brooke White, and the second scored by Kenyon, to make the score now 3-0 Huskies, and about 12 minutes left in the period.
Once again two more goals were scored within a minute, still in the first period. At 15:59 White would rally the puck up to Nancy Collins, who passed it to Kim Greene for the goal, and at 16:43 Kenyon slid it to Rachel Bertram for the fifth goal of the night. The period ended 5-0.
Only one goal was scored in the second period, at 3:37 by Tranzana Brown on an assist by Kathryn Sands, to make the scoreboard 6-0. The rest of the second period the puck was passed from one side of the ice to the other, BU struggling to stop a shut out, and the Huskies trying to be honorable about their game.
Knowing they took the game from the BU club team, the Huskies took it easy the rest of the game, practicing their passing and communication. They could not help the inevitable, however, and score yet another two goals. Bertram assisted Linda Desruisseaux for the first, Sands was assisted by Jennifer Bergeron and Lindsay Snider for the second.
Goalie Katy Augustyn had a shutout, saving all seven shots taken on goal.
