Northeastern’s Boston campus saw an increase in reports of rape and domestic violence during the 2024 calendar year, according to recently released security reports covering crime statistics at Northeastern’s campuses.
Northeastern is federally mandated to release an Annual Security Report, or ASR, every Oct. 1 detailing campus crime statistics and a fire safety report following the 1990 Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act.
The data does not reflect the entire scope of campus security, as “not all statistics that were received were in a usable format for Clery Act reporting,” the report reads.
“Northeastern annually requests crime statistics from MBTA [Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority] police for MBTA stations and property that surround campus. Prior to 2023, the MBTA police provided those statistics broken out by the specific location where the crime occurred so the university could determine if it was within Clery-reportable geography,” a Northeastern spokesperson said in an email to The News Oct. 8. “The MBTA no longer provides this breakdown.”
Northeastern has 13 campuses across the country and abroad, but reports are available for only 11 — excluding its new campus at Marymount Manhattan College in New York and Northeastern’s Innovation Campus in Burlington. Satellite campuses are not directly supervised by the Northeastern University Police Department, or NUPD, so Northeastern assigns Campus Security Authorities, or CSAs, to report crimes to local police and NUPD in Boston. CSAs are designated Northeastern employees who are trained for the job and are mandated reporters under Title IX.
Most satellite campuses recorded fewer than five crimes in 2024, but most local police departments did not respond to a request for statistics or the responses were incomplete, according to the reports.
Boston
There were a total of 73 reports in the 2024 calendar year, compared to 71 reports in 2023 and 102 reports in 2022.
The numbers on the report only concern the most serious offense in cases when multiple offenses occurred, based on the Clery Act’s hierarchy rule. Different crimes are counted differently — some, including aggravated assaults, are totaled with the number of victims and some, including robberies, with the amount of incidents.
While total sex offenses remained the same — at 13 reports — since 2023, rape cases increased from eight to 10. Fondling cases dropped by two; “incest” and “statutory rape” categories remained zero throughout since 2022.
Weapon violations increased from two to three, with two on campus and one in a non-campus facility. The report defines a weapon violation as “the violation of laws or ordinances prohibiting the manufacture, sale, purchase, transportation, possession, concealment, or use of firearms, cutting instruments, explosives, incendiary devices, or other deadly weapons.” The Clery Act categorizes weapon violations as the most severe crime among the Part II offenses, which also include drug and liquor-related violations.
Motor vehicle thefts increased from five to six cases, while burglaries dropped from nine to six cases and arson dropped from one case to none.
Domestic violence reports doubled from three to six after a notable decrease from eight cases in 2022. The record recorded a domestic violence case in student housing. In 2022, the reports were on campus or on public property.
Both robbery and aggravated assault increased by two and three cases, respectively, from 2023 to 2024. Robbery statistics were calculated by incidents and aggravated assaults were totaled by the number of victims.
While crimes are categorized with their distinctive descriptions and criteria, there are some overlaps — robbery and aggravated assault can also be considered hate crimes, or Part III crimes, if the offenses “manifest evidence of bias.”
All incidents of harassment, discrimination and retaliation were reported to the Office for University Equity and Compliance, according to the ASR.
Hate crime cases were halved from four to two. The report said the two hate-crime cases were on-campus vandalism incidents, one motivated by religious bias and the other by national origin.
Arlington
Northeastern University Arlington reported zero crimes in 2024.
Since its opening in January 2023, there has been only one reported crime of motor vehicle theft occurring on public property.
Charlotte
Northeastern’s Charlotte campus had zero reported crimes in 2024.

London
Northeastern University London reported a total of three crimes in 2024, including one rape case and two stalking incidents on its non-campus properties. The report did not include any incidents reported to the local police department because it did not respond to a request, according to the ASR.
Miami
Northeastern University Miami opened in September 2023, and zero crimes were reported through December 2024. The campus does not have residential facilities or non-campus properties.
Oakland
Reported crimes on Northeastern’s Oakland campus rose from four to six in 2024, with one report of rape, one report of domestic violence and four reports of stalking. The rape was reported in student housing. The report also noted that not all security agencies responded to a request for statistics.
Portland
There was one aggravated assault incident on public property in the 2024 report for Northeastern University Portland. The university reported zero crimes in 2022 and 2023.
Not all local agencies responded to a request for statistics, according to the report.
San Jose
In this year’s report, Northeastern added a footnote that said it conducted a “self-initiated review” and determined some of the crimes it previously reported on public property “did not occur within the definition of public property geography.” As a result, the table zeroed out the robbery, aggravated assault, motor vehicle theft, weapons violations and drug violations incidents that were logged in past years.
There was one report of a drug violation on public property in 2024.
Seattle
There were two on-campus burglary reports in 2024.
Toronto
There were no reported crimes in 2024.
Vancouver
No crimes were reported in 2022, 2023 or 2024.
Fire report
There were three reported unintentional fire incidents on the Boston campus and one in Oakland, classified under electrical and cooking. There was also one trash can fire, categorized as accidental.
No intentional fires were reported.
