Mari Creatini and the Northeastern Field Hockey team have both caught fire, with Creatini taking home America East Player of the Week award for the second week in a row and the Huskies thumping another pair of non-league opponents to win their third straight game. The victories, 2-0 Sunday at Holy Cross, and 5-1 Friday against Quinnipiac, kept the Huskies in a holding pattern at number 12 in the nation. Creatini racked up eight points with her second hat trick in three games (the first of her career coming last week against Michigan) and a pair of assists, in the shellacking of Quinnipiac at Sweeney Field. The Huskies lit up the scoreboard 19:54 into the first half when senior captain Melissa Rowell fired a shot on NU’s sixth penalty corner that thudded off the goal’s backstop. Creatini, on corners as usual, put the ball in play while senior captain Leigh Shea settled the ball for the shooter before the strike, both were awarded assists. The Huskies went ahead 2-0 10 minutes later, when Creatini wristed a thigh-high penalty shot past the QU goalie. In what could have been a momentum turning moment, the Bobcats finished their only shot of the half when Danielle Avenoso tipped home a pass from Kristen McCarthy to cut the Northeastern lead in half with seconds. The goal, Quinnipiac’s first against NU in the last four meetings between the teams, seemed to energize the squad briefly. The Bobcats were quickly deflated in the second half when Sarah Webber and Alli Bolster put together some nifty passing on NU’s fourth straight corner before Webber buried a shot nine minutes into the half. The Huskies began capitalizing on their corners, which effectively put the fork in the Bobcats. Creatini scored her second goal of the game, tipping a Webber corner shot over the goalie, and Melissa Rowell made good on her second corner try of the day, blasting another shot by the helpless keeper. Creatini’s hat trick was complete when she tipped home a Jay Quinn shot with 3:30 left in the game. “(Mari’s) strong on the ball,” said Huskies coach Cheryl Murtagh. “When she has it on her stick it’s tough to take away.” “I think it was a total team effort,” Creatini said of her hat trick. “I just happened to be the last one to put the ball in. If teams decide to cover me more, we have plenty of people that can score.” The Huskies played a similarly dominant game on Sunday at Holy Cross, albeit with less to show for it on the scoreboard. Despite holding the edge on shots (17-2) and corners (16-4), Northeastern came away with only a 2-0 victory. “We dominated the game,” said Murtagh. “But I would have liked to see us score a few more goals.” Redshirt freshman Natalie Singelais potted the first and eventual game-winning goal with 12:41 remaining in the first half. The tally was the first game winner of her career. “She has great touch in front of the net,” Murtagh said of Singelais. “She’s quick and does a good job on deflections.” In what is becoming a reoccurring experience, Creatini tipped home a Webber shot off a penalty corner to pad the Huskies lead 15 minutes into the second half. The Huskies will line up against Boston College Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium to take on an offensively talented Eagles squad. Saturday sees the Northeastern women kick off their America East title defense on the road versus Delaware.
