As an introduction to rush week, the sororities and fraternities hosted “Letters and Leis” in the freshman quad Saturday to lend objective advice to students who are thinking about going Greek.
Along with a mass of “brothers” and “sisters” adorned with creative shirts to display their letters, the quad was filled with Frisbees, leis and smoke from the barbecue.
Letters and Leis was a way to give interested students a glimpse of Greek life. Alanna Richman, a middler business major and member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority, described Greek life as a great way to “meet a lot of new friends.”
Richman said that pledges should “want to be part of a group, and have team spirit.”
According to Pete Antonellis, a senior, and member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and Vice President of the Interfraternity Council, Greek life is not only about having fun, but gaining a great sense of camaraderie as well.
“There is always somebody around,” he said. “There is always somebody on the other end of the phone to help you out.”
Antonellis said that there is no clear cut definition of who should pledge a fraternity.
“There’s no particular major you should have — just a minimum GPA,” he said. “We don’t look for what your father does, we look for good, quality guys.”
The event was designed to promote Greek life in general, not any particular group.
