Aoun shows support for military students

In light of the government’s shutdown and subsequent suspension of the Military Tuition Assistance (TA) program, President Joseph E. Aoun urged Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel to continue the program and declared Northeastern would fund those students for the rest of the fall semester.

IMP presentation to BRA cancelled

Northeastern was scheduled to present its Institutional Master Plan (IMP) at the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) board of directors meeting held in City Hall on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.. But at 4:30 p.m., Northeastern withdrew its IMP from the meeting’s agenda, following discussions with the BRA.

Crime Log: October 7 – October 14

Entry of the Week: Saturday, October 12th, 2:23 a.m. A student reported a drunk man running and kicking doors in the fourth floor hallway of Davenport Commons B. Officers reported a door kicked in with the lock on the floor. The student was in the room sleeping. The student reported he was waiting for a resident of the apartment. Officers determined that no such resident lived in the apartment, and the student admitted to consuming four shots of rum at a party somewhere in the building. He was checked by EMS and cleared, then taken into custody for malicious destruction. A work order was placed for the shattered door and broken lock. The female resident returned and determined nothing was missing from the apartment, and was then escorted to a friend’s apartment.

Public safety report shows crime increase from 2010 to 2012

Reported crime both on and off campus has risen over the past year, including an overall increase in drug violations and reports of domestic violence in these three years, according to a report from the university’s Public Safety Division.

GrandMarc project coming along in second year

The GrandMarc/YMCA construction project on Huntington Avenue, right next door to the historic YMCA of Greater Boston, got off to a slow start after it was first proposed in October 2010, but is now at the halfway point of its development.

Panel addressed pressing issue of politics in Syria

Experts called for immediate diplomatic approach and international cooperation to resolve controversial issues in Syria in a panel discussion on Tuesday. The panel, “Syria and the World: Panel Discussion on Controversial Issues in Security Studies,” was hosted by the Department of Political Science and the Northeastern Humanities Center, focused on the history and present status of Syria’s political turmoil.

Entrepreneurship program ranked top 10

Northeastern’s entrepreneurship program was ranked 10th in the nation in the most recent edition of the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine, after being ranked 13th in 2012.

Entry of the week: Saturday, October 5, 12:03 a.m. A resident reported there was a loud party on the first two floors of 9 Symphony Rd. that was spilling out onto the street. Officers reported there was a large party in the basement as well as the first floor and a large group of about 175 to 200 people exiting the rear of the building.

New age labs for health students

The attendees of the opening of the Arnold S. Goldstein Simulation Laboratories Suite, on Sept. 19, witnessed a birthing as well as students taking care of a patient with heart palpitations. Although it was only a simulation, students of the Bouve College of Health Sciences were the first to use the new state-of-the-art simulation laboratories. The laboratories, four in total, are designed to simulate real-life environments such as a doctor’s office, homeless shelter or hospital room.

New class offers chance to sport Google Glass

This fall, Northeastern students wear cutting-edge Google Glass around campus to design innovative personalized health interface technologies. These students will pitch their ideas to computer and information science and health sciences professor Stephen Intille and speech language pathology and audiology professor Rupal Patel for a new course called Health Innovation with Google Glass.
