Crime Log: November 4 – November 11

Entry of the week: Wednesday, Nov. 6, 3:02 p.m. A student reported that on Sunday, he was at Tavern in the Square in Allston, when he was engaged in conversation with another man. The student said the man told him he was also a student, and asked if the student could cash a check for $460 because banks were closed at that time of night. The student gave the man $300 and the man gave him the check. When the student attempted to cash the check at Bank of America, he was informed that the check was fake. The student was also advised to file a report with the Boston Police Department (BPD).

World Series victory parade

On Saturday morning, a crowd of Red Sox fans gathered on the streets to celebrate the team's World Series victory Wednesday night. The world champions waved at the crowd from atop approximately 24 duck boats with beards, and paraded down the streets from Fenway Park into the Charles River. News photographer Xander Miller was among the fans, and photographed the celebration.

Students meet with Snell Library staff to discuss library renovations

The Snell Library staff held a town hall meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss the recent renovations of the library facilities, as well as possibilities for future developments and expansions.

Entry of the week: Friday, Nov. 1, 1:26 a.m. A student reported he was approached at the rear entrance to Stetson East by a man who shouted “Yo,” and then punched him in the face when he turned around. The suspect was described to be wearing a fake beard and all camouflage. The victim was not in need of medical attention.

Mike Lake to run for lieutenant governor

Mike Lake, class of 2002, graduated from Northeastern with five majors: political science, management of information systems, communications, finance and entrepreneurship. He co-founded the Dog House, was treasurer of his senior class and was able to co-op at the White House under the Clinton Administration as well as in Ireland for the prime minister. Now, the executive director of World Class Cities Partnership and City-to-City of Northeastern’s School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, is running for a political office of his own: lieutenant governor of Massachusetts. His only declared opponent is Steve Kerrigan from Lancaster, but candidates can continue to declare intentions to run until the filing deadline in June of 2014.

Student entrepreneurs create prototypes at InnoWeekend

Within the time-limit of 48 hours, student innovators created prototypes and business models to compete for a combined prize of $1,000 at InnoWeekend, a competition hosted by the Northeastern Entrepreneurs Club last weekend. Among the seven competing teams, Locktopus was awarded first place and Fit Plus won second, followed by QPrez.

Raleigh Werner, cofounder of Jumpshell, explained the mayoral candidates’ positions on student housing in an eBook titled “The Future of Student Housing in Boston: How the 2013 Mayoral Election will Affect Student Housing,” released this week.

Entry of the week: Sunday, Oct. 27, 4:32 p.m. A student reported a man stole his cell phone from the Clemente Park football field, jumped into the water and began to swim away. Boston Police responded to the same call and assumed jurisdiction.

Professor Nick Daniloff named as Journalism Educator of the Year

Through role play and a real-world approach to teaching, School of Journalism Professor Nick Daniloff earned the honor of Journalism Educator of the Year by the New England Newspaper and Press Association (NENPA). Daniloff accepted the award on Oct. 10 at the New England Newspaper Conference.

CAMD looking to merge departments

College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD) dean Xavier Costa proposed in a letter addressed to the CAMD faculty and students on Oct. 3 the potential changes to the college, like merging the music and theatre departments and School of Journalism and communication studies department.
