Jewish organizations express discrimination concerns

Jewish advocacy group the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) last month urged Northeastern to investigate allegations that Jewish students at the university are being discriminated against. In a letter sent to President Joseph E. Aoun on Aug. 23, the ADL said several students came to the organization with concerns about incidents discussed in an earlier letter to the university from another Pro-Israel organization: the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA). The ZOA letter, sent in July, said the university has not taken proper action to stop faculty members and student organizations who have allegedly exhibited anti-semitic behaviors.

Group to invest in student startups

Taxis now accepting Husky Dollars

Cashless cabs is not a spinoff TV-show. The term has been coined for a deal recently made between Northeastern University and four of Boston’s seven licensed taxi companies. Students can now pay for cab fares with Husky Dollars using their student ID cards.

Experts discussed Northeastern’s public opinion poll results from “Innovative Imperative: Enhancing Higher Education Outcomes” at the second annual panel meeting at the National Press Club in Washington on Sept. 17. The poll addressed the need to transform higher education for a new demographic of students and prepare graduates for the global economy.

50th anniversary of Birmingham Bombing observed

On the morning of Sunday, Sept. 15, 1963, a pack of dynamite exploded on the steps of the 16th street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. Planted by several members of the Ku Klux Klan, the blast killed four African-American girls - 11-year-old Denise McNair,, and 14-year-olds Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley. An important moment in the civil rights movement, the bombing led to public outcry that fueled racial tension throughout the nation. Nine months later, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

After a nation wide search for the successor to Northeastern University’s current Director of Public Safety Joseph Griffin, Northeastern will welcome Michael Davis, the current chief of police in Brooklyn Park, Minn., to the position on Nov. 1.

Joyce Foster, activist for the Fenway community, dies at 84

A vigorous activist for her neighborhood, resident Joyce Foster made a name for herself in the Northeastern University community by fighting vehemently for the wellbeing of the Fenway. Foster, 84, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on Aug. 10 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
